Mist Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics mist, specifically the obscurity of mist, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms involve obscure movements and attacks that disorientate and confuse the target, similar to how a thick layer of mist obscures one's vision. Users of Mist Breathing also visualize themselves seemingly creating and manipulating mist when unleashing its techniques.
Based on Mist Breathing's only known user, Muichiro Tokito, who wears baggy clothing that covers his arms and legs in order to conceal his movements as much as possible, it can be assumed that most other users would also have to don clothing that hide their limbs from their enemy in order to fully maximize the potential of this Breathing Style.
Mist Breathing originally has 6 known forms and techniques, and a seventh one created and only utilized by the current Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito.
First Form: Low Clouds, Distant Haze (壱ノ型垂天遠霞,Ichi no kata: Suiten Tōgasumi?)[1] - The user performs a singular and powerful frontal thrust.
Second Form: Eight-Layered Mist (弐ノ型八重霞,Ni no kata: Yaekasumi?)[2] - The user performs eight slashes in quick succession.
Third Form: Scattering Mist Splash (参ノ型霞散の飛沫,San no kata: Kasan no Shibuki?)[3] - The user performs a powerful and swift circular slash that can blow away incoming projectiles.
Fourth Form: Shifting Flow Slash (肆ノ型移流斬り,Shi no kata: Iryūgiri?)[4] - The user takes a low stance before dashing toward the target and slashing them.
Fifth Form: Sea of Clouds and Haze (伍ノ型霞雲の海,Go no kata: Kaun no Umi?)[5] - The user charges at their target at blistering speeds in a zig-zag motion while performing a barrage of continuous slashes in front and/or around them.
Sixth Form: Lunar Dispersing Mist (陸ノ型月の霞消,Roku no kata: Tsuki no Kashō?)[6] - The user leaps into the air and performs a multitude of slashes in a somersaulting motion, decimating dozens of targets at once.
Seventh Form: Obscuring Clouds (漆ノ型朧,Shichi no kata: Oboro?)[7] - The personal creation of Muichiro Tokito. A movement-based technique designed to heavily disorientate the target, which is done so by fluctuating the user's tempo. When the user appears before the target, they move incredibly slow, but then accelerate to blistering speeds before getting hit, making it seem like they disappeared into a cloud of mist. When done repeatedly, it can disorientate the target to the point of making them think they are being covered in a thick layer of mist.
