Yoshiwara ( (よし) (わら) Yoshiwara?) is a district located in Tokyo, Japan, and it serves as the main location of the Entertainment District Arc. It is a red light district, a location with a high concentration of prostitution and sex-oriented businesses.

History[]

Yoshiwara Scenery during the Edo Period

Yoshiwara during the Edo period.

Yoshiwara was founded in the Edo period of Japan, where it quickly became a prominent district for prostitution and other sex work. The highest ranking courtesans were known as Oirans. Three of the most famous and prominent pleasure houses in the district during the Taisho period were the Tokito House, Kyogoku House, and Ogimoto House.

For about a century, before the latest intervention of the Demon Slayer Corps, Yoshiwara became the home and the lair of two extremely powerful demons: the siblings Daki and Gyutaro, the dual holders of the position of Upper Rank Six of the Twelve Kizuki. Owing to Daki's great beauty, experience in sex work, and her unique Blood Demon Art, they made Yoshiwara a successful hunting ground, where they captured and devoured numerous victims over the years. Daki's nigh-immortality and subsequent attempts to hide her true nature started the urban legend of a incredibly beautiful but also incredibly cruel Oiran, the stories passing down generations. Most attempts to stop them by the Demon Slayer Corps were unsuccessful, with Gyutaro having killed 15 Hashira and Daki having killed 7.

During the Taisho Period, Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui was given the mission of hunting down the demonic presence in Yoshiwara and sent in his three wives, Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma, to infiltrate the three most prominent pleasure houses in the Entertainment District and search for clues on his behalf. When all three suddenly stopped providing him with information, Tengen began his own investigation to save them and find the demon himself.

Synopsis[]

Entertainment District Arc[]

Tengen attempted to take Aoi Kanzaki and Naho Takada as he needed female Demon Slayers to accompany him. His forcible abduction of the two was stopped by Kanao Tsuyuri, Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi, and Tanjiro Kamado, who then proposed to accompany him on his mission instead, alongside his partners Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. Satisfied with three willing Demon Slayers, Tengen began the mission to save his wives and the people of Yoshiwara.

Upon arriving to Yoshiwara, the trio were amazed by the bustling city and separated from Tengen, with Zenitsu being beckoned by the girls of the district, and Tanjiro and Inosuke in awe of their surroundings, having lived in the mountains their entire lives. They regrouped at a safe house and were assigned disguises in the hopes the three Demon Slayers could be taken into the three most prominent pleasure houses, as Tengen assigned his wives to. Tanjiro, due to his diligent and hardworking attitude, was taken first and went to the Tokito House, the same house that Suma was assigned to.

Later, Tengen, Zenitsu, and Inosuke watched as the Oiran of the Tokito House, Koinatsu, travelled with her procession to a new client. Inosuke was then spotted by a chaperone of the Ogimoto House, the same house that Makio was assigned to, where he was promptly taken in. Zenitsu was left last, with Tengen assigning him to the Kyogoku House, the same house that Hinatsuru was in, much to the latter's displeasure.

After the three settled in, they each began their own investigation. Inosuke, upon learning that Makio has not left her room for some time, barged into her quarters to find the place torn and disheveled. Seeing the windows closed and with no other possible exit, he surmised that a demon was in the attic and tried to pursue it. It fled downstairs and Inosuke lost track of its location, his kimono hampering his acute senses. Tanjiro hears that Suma had left the House after falling in love, but the claims are dismissed by Koinatsu and every night, he detects a demonic scent through the air.

Zenitsu used his sense of hearing and detected a young girl crying in a messy and destroyed room. He attempted to comfort her and figure out what happened to her, only to be confronted by Warabihime, the Oiran of the Kyogoku House and a disguised Daki. However, her sudden appearances and inhuman nature startled Zenitsu, leading him to correctly deduce that she was the demon that they were searching for, and an Upper Rank at that. After Zenitsu was captured by Daki, she entered the Tokito house and began to absorb Koinatsu. At the same time, Inosuke discovers a large underground chamber Filled with skeletons and obi containing Daki's victims.r4

Daki was discovered by Tanjiro when he detected her scent back to Koinatsu's room and the two fought, with the Demon Slayer successfully saving Koinatsu. After Tengen found Hinatsuru, who had poison herself to leave the district but was tracked by Daki, he then heard a large battle deep under the streets and began to dig using his Sound Breathing. The battle, Inosuke struggling against a sentient obi after locating the absorbed Suma, Makio, and Zenitsu, soon changes tide as the three are freed from the obi and aid him in saving the other victims. Tengen joins the battle and overpowers the obi. However, the whole he had dug allows the severed obi to leave the chamber and fly back into Daki, returning her to her full strength.

The destruction caused by Daki's Obi attack

A street is destroyed by Daki's attack.

As Daki and Tanjiro continue to clash, civilians began to notice the battle, leading the annoyed Daki to use her obi in a destructive onslaught that carves the city streets and slaughters numerous innocents. Deeply angered by her callousness and indifferent attitude to murdering humans, Tanjiro snaps and attacks the Upper Rank relentlessly, using his Hinokami Kagura continuously to enhance his speed and fighting even further, allowing him to battle the demon on equal grounds. However, since he had not been maintaining his breathing, he soon collapses in agony and exhaustion before being able to behead her. Daki attempts to kill the weakened Tanjiro but is suddenly attacked by Nezuko Kamado, his sister and a rogue demon Muzan Kibutsuji had previously wanted death. The two demons battle but Nezuko steadily gains the upper hand with her increasingly potent healing and damaging Blood Demon Art, even aided by a traumatic memory Daki recalls as she is on fire. The young demon kicks the Upper Rank through several houses but accidentally injures a bystander, nearly killing the innocent girl when her lust of blood overwhelms her until Tanjiro's timely intervention.

Gyutaro throws his Kama at Tengen

The true Upper Six attacks the Sound Hashira.

Tengen soon appears and easily decapitates Daki, before chiding Tanjiro for allowing Nezuko to evolve further as a demon despite previously fighting back the urge. However, Daki does not die, her distressed cries causing her brother Gyutaro to emerge from her body. Even more powerful than Daki, the new demon quickly attacks Tengen and overwhelms him, forcing the Sound Hashira to back away and fend them off with his explosives. Tengen is poisoned by Gyutaro while facing the siblings until the arrival of Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Tanjiro after taking Nezuko to safety. Despite the added numbers, Gyutaro implants his eye into Daki's forehead, allowing the demons to share their vision.

Suma helps in the evacuation of the civilians

Suma carries Koinatsu while leading the evacuation of Yoshiwara.

As Daki attacks Zenitsu and Inosuke, Gyutaro attacks Tengen and Tanjiro; fighting as one, they overwhelm the Demon Slayers with their incessive and relentless attacks, preventing them from gaining ground. At the same time, Suma and Makio lead the evacuation of the district's inhabitants when the battle gradually became more intense.

Swordsmith Village Arc[]

Trivia[]

  • The destruction of Yoshiwara during the battle between the Demon Slayers and the Upper Six siblings may be an analogy to the real fire of Yoshiwara in 1913 or the near destruction of the district during the Kanto earthquake of 1923, both of which occured during the Taisho era.
