Kie Kamado ( (かま) () () () Kamado Kie?) is a minor character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She was the wife of Tanjuro Kamado and the mother of Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado. She was killed by Muzan Kibutsuji.

Appearance[]

Kie was a woman with a noticeably light complexion, kind, dark purple eyes that appear a lighter color around the rims of their irises, and a small beauty mark located on the left of her face below her lower lip. She had black hair, worn tied back in a messy bun with a few loose strands left to dangle over her face.

She wore a purple and cream checkered kimono with a white and long-sleeved kappōgi over the top, she also sported a white tenugui cloth that she wears around her head, covering most of her hair.

Personality[]

Kie was a warm and loving person; as the mother of 6 children, she was always seen displaying a very affectionate and caring personality. Since she was a single mother, Kie always tried to be as warm and kind to her children as she could to fill the gap her husband left. She was very protective of her children, but at the same time, she also taught them to be independent.

Kie also demonstrated a positive and encouraging vibe, especially during her appearance in Nezuko Kamado's subconsciousness, encouraging her to wake and help her brother to fight and telling her to do her best.[1]

History[]

At some point in her life, Kie married Tanjuro Kamado and had their six children. After her husband’s death, she was left to take care of them by herself, managing to support and keep her whole family safe and sound through all of the hardships they endured.

Tanjiro finds his family dead.

As he departs to sell charcoal in the evening, Kie stops her son, Tanjiro, and notes that his face is dirty, kneeling down to wipe off the ash from each of his cheeks and telling him that he doesn’t need to go down to the village and sell charcoal on such a snowy night. Tanjiro replies that he wants to go so everyone can eat to their heart’s content, and Kie smiles and thanks him. As her other children gather around Tanjiro, complaining that they want to go down with him, Kie told them that they can’t because they can’t walk as fast as him, and can’t be carried by cart since he isn't taking it.

Kie and the rest of their family waved Tanjiro off, hoping for his safety and quick return.

That night, Muzan entered her home and proceeded to inject her with his blood, hopeful that he could turn Kie into a Demon who could withstand sunlight.

However, he was disappointed when Kie didn't survive, believing that creating a Demon capable of withstanding sunlight not so easy, with Nezuko unknowingly left as the only survivor but transformed into a demon. Tanjiro would later learn that the Muzan is the one to be responsible for the massacre.

A vision of Kie begs Nezuko to wake up and save Tanjiro.

During her battle against Lower Rank Five Rui, Nezuko becomes trapped in his webs and loses consciousness from the blood loss. As Tanjiro nears beheading him but is at risk of sustain more fatal wounds, a vision of Kie appears beside Nezuko and tearfully begs her to wake up and save him, causing Nezuko to use her own Blood Demon Art for the first time and aid Tanjiro in beating Rui.

Tanjiro leaves Kie and his family behind in a dream.

While trapped in Enmu's Blood Demon Art, Tanjiro dreams he is back with his family before their deaths and his journey as a Demon Slayer. Happy to be reunited, he forgets his mission to stop Enmu. Kie asked him to fetch water but while doing so, Tanjiro realizes then that he is in a false dream. Despite longing to stay with his family, Tanjiro makes the difficult and painful choice to leave them behind, with Kie watching him leave in sadness.

During his battle with Enmu, the demon forcibly puts Tanjiro inside a nightmare where his family accuses him of abandoning them to their deaths. Instead of being afraid, Tanjiro becomes enraged at his memories being manipulated and beheads Enmu, declaring they would never say such things.

Entertainment District Arc[]

In her battle against Upper Rank Six Daki, Nezuko, now in a berserk rage following the Upper Rank's attempt to kill Tanjiro overwhelms her in battle but accidentally injures a bystander. In her frenzied state, she almost kills the innocent civillian but is stopped by Tanjiro. On Tengen Uzui's joking advice to sing a lullaby, Tanjiro sings a song that Kie used to sing to them, causing Nezuko to imagine herself and her mother on a mountain trip in the past. The memory of her mother causes Nezuko to cry and calm down, shrinking from her enhanced demon form and going to sleep to heal.

Sunrise Countdown Arc[]

As the humanizing drug takes effect, Nezuko regains her memories and recalls the day when Muzan came to their home and attempted to transform them into demons, witnessing Kie's death.

Trivia[]

  • Her surname is composed of the Kan-on'yomi of the kanji for "Asarum caulescens" ( () ki?) and the nanori for "limb, branch and twig" ( () e?).
  • Like her son Tanjiro, Kie had a very hard forehead, being able to even defeat a wild boar by headbutting it.[2]
  • Kie was very skilled at cooking, she made a wide variety depending on each season. She also really liked trying out regional recipes that other people shared with her. Her children’s favorites were sanma-no-soba dumplings and tofu baked in miso.
  • Kie, her son Tanjiro, and Muzan Kibutsuji's doctor are the only three characters who know the exact place where the Blue Spider Lilies grow.
  • Kie's English voice actress, Dorothy Elias-Fahn, also voices Ozaki.
