Appearance[]
Kyogo was shown to be an incredibly tall man, even compared to Sanemi, who himself is noted to be a physically imposing individual. He has short jet black hair and a large scar over his left cheekbone. He possessed a large and muscular frame. Kyogo also had thin, almond-shaped eyes, a trait also seen in his children.
Kyogo wears a kimono with lavender and black irregular concave hexagons as its pattern, over a white juban.
Personality[]

Kyogo's domineering and cruel nature.
Kyogo was a cruel, aggressive, and confrontational man. He would mercilessly beat his wife and kids, using his superior physical might to abuse his much weaker family, seemingly for no reason. Genya's description of him as pathetic implies that Kyogo would always be looking for a way to hurt people. His harsh and violent personality also put him on the wrong side of other people, which would eventually lead to his death.
Even when his spirit met with Sanemi's in the afterlife, as the latter was close to death, his personality stayed mostly the same, denying Sanemi and Shizu's reunion and forcing him away from the afterlife to regain consciousness. However, he had some pride in passing on his genetic physical strength to his child, asking him to be proud of being his son as Sanemi would eventually survive the horrific wounds he had suffered in his battles and recover.
History[]
Kyogo was married to Shizu and the two would go on to have seven children; Sanemi, Genya, Shuya, Hiroshi, Koto, Teiko, and Sumi. However, Kyogo proved to be an incredibly abusive father and husband, ruthlessly beating his family. Shizu would often try to save her children from being hurt by putting herself in the path of the pain, despite being so much smaller than him. His vile nature earned not only the resentment of Sanemi and Genya, but to others as well.
Eventually, Kyogo would meet a violent end, getting stabbed to death due to other people's resentment of him. His demise would free the Shinazugawa family from his torment, although the death of the family's breadwinner made them struggle financially.
Synopsis[]
Swordsmith Village Arc[]
While reminiscing on his family during his battle with Hantengu's clone Sekido, Genya recalls Kyogo's abusive nature and death, which allowed them to live in peace without getting hurt. He did not have any kind words to say about his father, describing his death with satisfaction and claiming it was deserved.[1]
Sunrise Countdown Arc[]

Kyogo forces Sanemi to regain consciousness.
Following the battle with Muzan Kibutsuji, Sanemi's life began to fade away from suffering numerous severe wounds, and he would reunite with his mother's spirit in the afterlife. When he offered to be with her in Hell, due to Shizu deeming herself unfit to be in Heaven with her children, Kyogo appeared and stopped Sanemi from continuing with his wishes, pushing him away to fall from the afterlife. He told Sanemi to be proud that he is his son, as he's "extra tough". Eventually, Sanemi is able to regain consciousness and survive his wounds, though he curses Kyogo nonetheless.
Trivia[]
- Kyogo's given name ironically contains the kanji for "respectful, polite" (恭 kyo?) and "Chinese parasol tree, phoenix tree" (梧 go?).
- Genya's recollection of Kyogo describes him as having breath that "stinks of alcohol from morning until night", implying that his violent outbursts are a result of perpetual alcoholism.[2]
