Mist Breathing ( (かすみ) () (きゅう) Kasumi no kokyū?) is a Breathing Style derived from Wind Breathing.

Overview[]

Mist Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics mist, specifically the obscurity of mist, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms involve obscure movements and attacks that disorientate and confuse the target, similar to how a thick layer of mist obscures one's vision. Users of Mist Breathing also visualize themselves seemingly creating and manipulating mist when unleashing its techniques.

Based on Mist Breathing's only known user, Muichiro Tokito, who wears baggy clothing that covers his arms and legs in order to conceal his movements as much as possible, it can be assumed that most other users would also have to don clothing that hide their limbs from their enemy in order to fully maximize the potential of this Breathing Style.

Like Flower Breathing, Mist Breathing is also not a personal creation of any of the Taisho Era Hashira, being created in an era prior to that. In a flashback about the Demon Slayer Mark in the Sengoku period, a Demon Slayer with the same cloud-like Demon Slayer Marks as Muichiro's appears next to Yoriichi Tsugikuni, but it is uncertain whether he was the creator of Mist Breathing or a practitioner of another Breathing Style who coincidentally bore Muichiro's Demon Slayer Marks.

Known Techniques[]

Mist Breathing originally has 6 known forms and techniques, and a seventh one created and only utilized by the current Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito. All 7 forms would be demonstrated.

  • First Form: Low Clouds, Distant Haze ( (いち) (かた) (すい) (てん) (とお) (がすみ) Ichi no kata: Suiten Tōgasumi?)[1] - The user performs a singular and powerful frontal thrust.
  • Second Form: Eight-Layered Mist ( () (かた) () () (かすみ) Ni no kata: Yaekasumi?)[2] - The user performs eight slashes in quick succession.
  • Third Form: Scattering Mist Splash ( (さん) (かた) () (さん) () (ぶき) San no kata: Kasan no Shibuki?)[3] - The user performs a powerful and swift circular slash that can blow away incoming projectiles.
  • Fourth Form: Shifting Flow Slash ( () (かた) () (りゅう) () Shi no kata: Iryūgiri?)[4] - The user takes a low stance before dashing toward the target and slashing them.
  • Fifth Form: Sea of Clouds and Haze ( () (かた) () (うん) (うみ) Go no kata: Kaun no Umi?)[5] - The user charges at their target at blistering speeds in a zig-zag motion while performing a barrage of continuous slashes in front and/or around them.
  • Sixth Form: Lunar Dispersing Mist ( (ろく) (かた) (つき) () (しょう) Roku no kata: Tsuki no Kashō?)[6] - The user leaps into the air and performs a multitude of slashes in a somersaulting motion, decimating dozens of targets at once.
  • Seventh Form: Obscuring Clouds ( (しち) (かた) (おぼろ) Shichi no kata: Oboro?)[7] - The personal creation of Muichiro Tokito. A movement-based technique designed to heavily disorientate the target, which is done so by fluctuating the user's tempo. When the user appears before the target, they move incredibly slow, but then accelerate to blistering speeds before getting hit, making it seem like they disappeared into a cloud of mist. When done repeatedly, it can disorientate the target to the point of making them think they are being covered in a thick layer of mist.

Trivia[]

Demon Slayer Marks (Anime)

A Demon Slayer with the same markings as Muichiro during the Sengoku period.

  • Although Muichiro Tokito is Mist Breathing's only known user, Kokushibo remembers seeing Mist Breathing users in action before him, and another likely user/founder of Mist Breathing (with the same cloud-like Demon Slayer Marks as Muichiro's) appears next to Yoriichi Tsugikuni in a flashback about the Demon Slayer Mark in the Sengoku period.
  • Mist Breathing and Flower Breathing are the only two branching Breathing Styles besides the five main Breathing Styles that are not the personal creations of any of the Taisho Era Hashira.
  • Demons' opinion on being slayed by Mist Breathing and its wielder is as follows:[8]
    • "That bratty kid!" - Gyokko
    • "It hurt my pride." - Demon A
    • "I lost to that tyke?!" - Demon B
    • "He looked at me like I was a vomit-colored rock!" - Demon C
    • "His icy glare made me cry." - Demon D
