Description[]

Synopsis[]

Rehabilitation Training Arc[]

Sometime after the Lower Ranks Meeting, several passengers of the Mugen Train went missing, with the casualty count reaching at least 40. This suspicious pattern was not lost on the Demon Slayer Corps, who suspected that a demon was behind the disappearances. Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku was assigned to investigate the train, and with the recommendation of Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho, Demon Slayers Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira were also sent to accompany him. However, only Zenitsu who had grew up in a urban area was familiar with the train, as Tanjiro mistook it for a forest spirit and Inosuke mistook it for a monster.

The Demon Slayer Corps received word that the train was secretly transported to a certain storage area after a conductor had been murdered. As Kyojuro personally visited the storage facility, he met train maintenance workers who were fixing the train despite the rumors that it had become a man-eater and informed him that it was scheduled to return to service tomorrow. Kyojuro suddenly encountered a murderous demon serial killer named the Slasher, but after dispatching him, he concluded that he was not the culprit responsible for the 40 casualties.

After boarding, Kyojuro met with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. However, they were all put to sleep by the conductor punching a blood-coated ticket from Lower Rank One Enmu, a demon with somnokinetic abilities whom the conductor was collaborating with and was the demon responsible for the disappearances. As the Demon Slayers slept, Enmu met with his other human collaborators and instructed them to invade the dreams of the sleeping Demon Slayers in order to destroy their spiritual core, rendering their body an empty shell. However, all were repelled by the Demon Slayers, except for Tanjiro, as his invader was moved by his kindness. With interference from Nezuko Kamado and guidance from his father Tanjuro, Tanjiro was the first to break free of Enmu's grasp, and after knocking out the more hostile of Enmu's pawns, he moved towards the demon himself.

After a difficult battle on the roof of the coaches, where Enmu kept forcing Tanjiro to sleep, the demon was decapitated. However, Enmu's head emerged from a morphing lump of flesh and revealed that not only was he a decoy, but he, in fact, has fused with the Mugen Train itself. Enmu then tauntingly revealed his plan to devour all 200 passengers inside the train. After the rest of the Demon Slayers woke up, the result was a long and arduous battle where Kyojuro, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko all fought off the fleshy tendrils that were growing inside of the train and threatened the passengers. Tanjiro and Inosuke then took the battle outside the train on Kyojuro's instructions, with the latter Demon Slayer utilizing his Beast Breathing: Seventh Form: Spatial Awareness to locate Enmu's true head between the train's engine and its tender, with further investigation revealing that his neck was below the cab.

Despite Enmu's best efforts to defend himself, the two Demon Slayers got the better of him and Tanjiro dealt the finishing blow using Hinokami Kagura: Clear Blue Sky. After his failed attempt to kill the passengers at the last minute, Enmu's shock and pain from his decapitation caused the train to violently crash and derail. Shortly after this, Lower Rank One finally died and all traces of his flesh on the Mugen Train disintegrated with him. With the exception of Kyojuro, who was killed in a subsequent battle with Upper Rank Three Akaza following the crash, not a single one of the passengers died, a feat used to prove the fallen Hashira's heroics.

It is unknown whether or not the train was repaired or scrapped after its derailment.

Other Passengers[]

  • Conductor: A pawn of Enmu who participated in his scheme by punching the holes of the train tickets, and putting the passengers to sleep one-by-one. After completing this, Enmu rewards him by putting him to sleep and giving him a dream where he reunites with his dead wife and daughter.
  • Enmu's recruits: Four youths recruited by Enmu to enter the subconscious of the Demon Slayers and destroy their spiritual core with a bone awl. While Kyojuro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke were able to repel their intruders, the fourth, a sickly young man, could not bring himself to harm Tanjiro after witnessing how kind and pure his soul was. After Tanjiro wakes up, he knocks the first three unconscious before finding Enmu.
  • Engineer: Another pawn of Enmu. When Tanjiro and Inosuke attempt to decapitate fused Enmu, the engineer interferes and stabs Tanjiro with his awl before being knocked out. Tanjiro still shows compassion towards the man and asks Inosuke to help him following the train's derailment.

Trivia[]

  • The locomotive's class, an 8620, was first built during the Taisho Era, the period in which the story takes place.
