We're Uzui's wives! We'll do what we can but... I'm not a fighter!

Suma ( () () Suma?) is a supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a kunoichi and one of Tengen Uzui's wives.

Appearance[]

Suma is a young woman of short height and with shoulder-length black hair, short bangs, and blue eyes. Similar to the other wives of Tengen Uzui, she sports a shapely figure.

Suma wears a short, blue, sleeveless dress that shows both sides of her hips reaching her upper thighs with a plunging white neckline that exposes her cleavage, which is secured with a gray obi (light purple in some promotional art) where she probably stores her kunai. She wears gray ankle-length tabi socks and white zōri with blue straps.

When retired, Suma wears a more modest version of her usual clothes consisting on a blue kimono with lifted up sleeves, with a white yuban underneath, having a open window revealing her middle chest, along with white straps tied and laced up around her shoulder complex and on her back in a X, also cover plenty of her lower body to her ankles than before and a lighter-blue grey obi tied around her waist with a dark grey obijime on middle of it, securing it. She also tied her hair into a ponytail.

Personality[]

Suma's personality is particularly similar to Zenitsu Agatsuma's, expressing overdramatic and exaggerated emotions in practically every situation she's in. She also tends to give off a fearful and unconfident attitude when it comes to dangerous situations, as well as a tendency to cry easily, whether due to receiving praise or from fear when being near a demon. She tends to acts immature, arguing with her two co-wives (Makio in particular) and generally irritating them whenever she gets fussy or emotional. She tends to be naive and childish, often makes offputting remarks, like claiming that Hinatsuru is dead and watching from Heaven. Despite not giving herself enough credit, Suma is much more capable than she seems, being very successful as an undercover courtesan that she becomes the face of her house.

Despite this, she remains a loyal and loving wife to Tengen and cared for the people around her, leading the evacuation of Yoshiwara alongside Makio when the battle between the Upper Rank demons and Demon Slayers became more intense. Her love for Tengen is also prominently displayed when she forgoes her shy and unconfident demeanor and lunges at Nezuko Kamado and angrily scolds her for "cremating" her husband early, threatening to physically punish her in the process, later wailing in relief when the poison inside him was burned away.

Makio explains to Tanjiro Tengen's true demeanor in training

Suma's much more cheerful demeanor post-retirement.

Outside of combat, in her retired life, Suma is shown to be much more cheerful and relaxed, As she assists Tengen in his section of Hashira Training by serving as a cook, she is prone to way less emotional outbursts, instead happily serving meals, gossiping with her co-wives, and getting amused at Tengen harshly reprimanding the trainees, knowing that his harsh words come from a place of worry.[2] However, she can still slip back into her notorious emotional personality, as shown when she heavily dotes on Nezuko in the wake of the final battle, and cries to Tengen when Makio strikes her for it.

Like her co-wives, Suma has a soft spot for Tanjiro, due to his monumental aid in the Entertainment District, offering him kind words during his training, and wishing the best for him in his battle against Muzan. [2]

History[]

At some point of her life, Suma married Tengen Uzui, along with Makio and Hinatsuru, although she volunteered to be his wife while the other two were arranged marriages. After she left the clan, her family journeyed to see Kagaya Ubuyashiki in order to fight as a part of the Demon Slayer Corps.[3]

At some point in the past, Suma was instructed alongside Makio and Hinatsuru by Tengen on his personal ideology: to put their own lives first, then respectable humans, and lastly himself. Later, when Makio questioned this in private as it went against what they had been taught as kunoichi, Hinatsuru assured her that as long as she was okay with it, Tengen would also approve of it.[4] She also wished for the four of them to retreat from the front lines as soon as they defeated an Upper Rank.[5]

Synopsis[]

Entertainment District Arc[]

When investigating the Yoshiwara Entertainment District, Suma was assigned as an oiran to the Tokito House. However during the investigation, she disappeared and lost contact with Tengen Uzui. When Tanjiro arrives at the Tokito house in disguise, he overhears the rumor that Suma had run off with a wealthy suitor according to her diary, but is immediately doubtful sensing that something more sinister is occurring.

Later on, Inosuke Hashibira begins to search for the demon and stumbles upon a cavern with a hanging obi holding multiple people captive. As he begins his assault, he manages to free multiple captives including Suma and Makio. The two women proceed to defend the freed captives from being reabsorbed while Inosuke fights the obi. Then a large thundering sound is heard coming from above the cave, and Tengen bursts through the ceiling, rapidly slashing large portions of the obi. He lets the two women know that he's proud of them causing them both to emotionally tear up.

Despite wanting to keep his wives safe, Suma and Makio persuaded Tengen to pursue the demon instead. The two then led a mass evacuation of Yoshiwara to prevent further casualties when the battle between Tengen and the Demon Slayers and the siblings Daki and Gyutaro began to grow more destructive. Eventually, the demons are simultaneously decapitated by the group's efforts. A joyous Suma calls to Hinatsuru and, mistakenly believing she has passed, asks that she come back alive momentarily to see the successful defeat, only to be scolded by Makio for her thinking.

Suma, Makio, and Hinatsuru witness Tengen on fire

Suma witnesses Nezuko set Tengen on fire.

Despite the demons' deaths, Tengen remains poisoned by Gyutaro's blood, and despite giving him an antidote, his life begins to ebb away. Suma cries loudly at her husband's death, drowning his attempts to say his last words and annoying Makio and Hinatsuru. The former, fed up by Suma's antics, punishes her by stuffing rocks in her mouth. Nezuko Kamado then appears and suddenly sets Tengen ablaze with her Blood Demon Art, causing a horrified Suma to tackle and reprimand her for cremating him too early. Tengen, now healed and no longer poisoned, calms her and realizes he is fine, causing his wives to jump on him and cry in relief. Thankful, Suma thanks Nezuko and Tanjiro for saving him.

Moments later, the Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro, appears to congratulate Tengen on killing Upper Rank Six, though he makes it clear it was still the least of the Upper Ranks. Suma attempts to scold Obanai for insulting him but is scared away by his snake and tightly hugs Tengen in fright, causing an annoyed Hinatsuru to push her away from him.

Swordsmith Village Arc[]

Hashira Training Arc[]

Suma assists Makio and Hinatsuru in Tengen's stage of Hashira Training, giving out food to the exhausted participants and listening to her husband explain the entirety of the Training Program. She greets Tanjiro when he appears to begin his training. Tanjiro thanks them for their help in Yoshiwara, but they claim they are the ones to be grateful. They hear and are amused by Tengen demanding the trainees eat more, threatening to make the next exercise harder should they leave any food[6][2]

Later on, Tengen orders the trainees to run to a mountain and return or be denied dinner. As Tanjiro is stretching for the exercise, Tengen's wives approach him; Hinatsuru and Suma remark that despite his outward harsh exterior, Tengen is actually gentle on the inside. Having heard them talking about him, Tengen sarcastically tells them as much, to their bemusement.

Tanjiro is thanked by Suma for helping them

Suma thanks Tanjiro for helping them in the kitchen.

After helping Tengen's wives with chores in the kitchen, Tanjiro is thanked with a cup of Gyokuro tea. Hinatsuru takes the chance to thank him and his companions for saving them in Yoshiwara. She begins to cry as she remarks that Tengen still wants to fight, leading to Suma adding that he calls out in his sleep. She listens as Hinatsuru wishes for Tanjiro to defeat Muzan. When Tanjiro finishes training with Tengen, Suma gives him a pack of food and bids him farewell.

Infinity Castle Arc[]

In the midst of the battle between the Demon Slayers and Muzan Kibutsuji, Suma alerts Tengen and Shinjuro Rengoku that Nezuko has fled from the Demon Slayer Headquarters and broken down a door to escape.

Sunrise Countdown Arc[]

In the wake of the final battle and Muzan's death, Suma visits the Kamado siblings in the Butterfly Mansion and begins to enthusiastically dote on Nezuko, leading Makio to scold her with a slap on the back of the head, prompting another of her famous tantrums. Later on, she poses for a group photo and later frolics in a field with her beloved husband and co-wives.

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Suma does not possess any form of superhuman abilities. However, as she was raised as a kunoichi, Suma possesses respectable shinobi skills, being capable of wielding a kunai as well as performing maneuvers and fighting much more proficiently than regular people can.
