(somewhat spoiler ish) This is just my opinion but becoming a pillar doesnt exactly require time but more on talent and skill, now of course both of them require time but in some cases not(like iin the latest chapter). And i like to consider the fact that some if not most pillars grew up knowing about demons or fighting demons themselves, some are even successors trained by former pillars like giyuu, shinobu(idk if shinobu was trained by kanae but they were together in the demon slaying corps), kanao(ik that kanao isnt a full fledged pillar im just setting examples so hold off on roasting me), and kyoujurou. Though I get the imbalance when it comes to pillars, but we got people like sanemi who went out to kill demons without a nichirin blade.
