Tanjiro's Status Report (
Synopsis[]
Tanjiro provides an report about the events following the battle between the Demon Slayers and Muzan Kibutsuji and the subsequent disbandment of the Demon Slayer Corps, giving an update about the comings and goings that have transpired in the lives of everyone involved.
Plot[]
Following the Corps' disbandment, Tanjiro and Nezuko now live in their old house with Inosuke and Zenitsu. Their morning routine consists of waking up before dawn, collecting water, and making breakfast; he and Inosuke catch fish in the river while Nezuko prepares rice and a side dish. Zenitsu does not leave bed as he claims his legs hurt in the morning, only getting up early once in the three days he's been living with them. Despite this, he always makes it to breakfast early to enjoy Nezuko's cooking while also doing the bare minimum amount of chores to avoid everyone's chagrin.
Due to their injuries from the battle, the three of them, as well as every surviving Corps member, have lost much of their strength; Tanjiro's washboard must be stabilised as he cannot use both hands. They later receive a package from Kiriya Ubuyashiki, containing an "eye-popping" amount of cash to support them financially; despite their kind refusal and opting to send it back, the former Oyakata continues to send more money in response. Not one to sit by doing nothing and having always enjoyed working, Tanjiro continues to make charcoal to support Nezuko and the others instead, and while many people opt to now use gas instead, some people continue to buy charcoal from him and Inosuke.
Many of his friends from the Corps would visit him often, including Sakonji Urokodaki, Takeuchi, and Murata, to think back to past times. His pen pal Giyu Tomioka now responds to his letters and is doing better mentality, along with a new hairstyle. The previous day, he joined Suma, Makio, Hinatsuru, and Tengen Uzui in a visit to a hot spring. Tanjiro also writes to Sanemi Shinazugawa but does not get any responses back, which the Kasugai Crows attribute to his inability to write despite being able to read. Though he does not want to bother Sanemi, Kiriya reassures him that the former Wind Hashira enjoys reading his letters. One day, Tanjiro comes home to find a package on the veranda; Nezuko had been home all day but hadn't noticed, making him realize that someone had placed it there secretly; the package contains ohagi and matcha as well as the scent of Sanemi, confirming it was him, much to Zenitsu's envy.
Once a month, everyone visits the Butterfly Mansion, now owned by Kanao Tsuyuri and Aoi Kanzaki, for a health check up, with Tanjiro noting that Kanao is an excellent doctor. As well as this, whenever he needs help understanding something, he would write to Yushiro through Kanao; Yushiro would respond quickly as he is not far. Nezuko would often visit Kanao and Aoi, riding atop Inosuke like a pack animal to get cooking tips, even one time bringing home ramune. He remarks that Inosuke is the strongest of them all, also noting that since she became human, Inosuke has been very fond and protective of Nezuko, following her at all times like a child with his mother. However, his closeness to Nezuko would in turn stoke Zenitsu's ire; when this happened, he would frequently complain about his hurt legs to draw Nezuko's attention towards him as she kindly massages his legs.
When Tanjiro warned Zenitsu that his actions were pitiful, he spitefully began writing in a book to calm himself down. Eventually, the book would be finished and be given the title of "The Legend of Zenitsu". He then asked for Tanjiro's feedback on it, but despite claiming it was based on reality, Tanjiro pointed out its numerous inaccuracies, such as Zenitsu's supposed promotion into the Rumble Hashira, he himself has apparently accrued massive debt and abandoned Nezuko, Inosuke being depicted as a demon, Sanemi as a thief, and Nezuko as a princess. When Zenitsu asked for his honest feedback, the Tanjiro notes his difficulty to follow the plot, how he spent seven pages introducing himself and Nezuko, his false claim of being a Hashira, and how he claimed himself to be an absurd nine shaku (2.7 metres) in height.
Offended at Tanjiro's candor, Zenitsu throws a trantrum, but Tanjiro forces him to face the reality of acting more maturely if he likes Nezuko, claiming she will see him as a little brother instead of a man if his antics continue. No longer able to use being a swordsman as a way to impress her, he must reform his ways and tell her directly about how he truly feels. The next day, Zenitsu got up early and began a routine of taking long walks, something that shocked Tanjiro and Nezuko, who even became worried about his sudden change in demeanor. Days later, he took Nezuko on a walk with him while Tanjiro stayed behind with Inosuke. Suddenly, they hear Zenitsu yell out his inner feelings; he tells Nezuko he is in love with her and wants to marry her, asking that she make a choice within a year's time and vowing to protect her. For the rest of the day, Nezuko cannot hear anything properly due to the volume of Zenitsu's forceful expression of his love.
Tanjiro cherishes the monotonous, peaceful days, and he prays that once he is gone, they would continue to live a quiet life. Later on, Zenitsu shows him a revised version of his book which now claims that Tanjiro had paid his debt and that he and Inosuke were taken in by Zenitsu as his followers, which Tanjiro finds slightly more acceptable. He wonders when Nezuko and Zenitsu would get married but knows the answer will come in a year. With that, he concludes his update on their lives after the battle.
