The Temple Demon was the first Demon encountered by Tanjiro Kamado.

Appearance

The Temple Demon was a muscular Demon of average height. He had pale, ashy-gray skin with two green marks around both of his upper arms and legs and shoulder-length, spiky dark-green hair parted at the middle of his forehead. He also possessed prominent fangs and sharp nails, attributes common to Demons.

The Temple Demon was seen wearing a sleeveless, blue tunic with a dark-turquoise-and-white pattern outlining his exposed chest. He wore pale bracelets around his wrists and ankles.

After getting his head kicked off by Nezuko Kamado, the Demon grew two muscular arms out of the sides of his head.[1]

Personality

The Temple Demon, like most Demons, was cruel and ruthless to humans, attacking Tanjiro without a moment's hesitation upon discovering he was human.[2] He appeared to be quite defensive of his territory as he was quite irate about Tanjiro and Nezuko intruding on his domain.[3] The Demon also displayed a sense of superiority over Tanjiro when the two fought, boasting his quick recovery after getting hit in the chin.[4]

History

The Demon had already been attacking travelers who take shelter at a small temple hut on the pathway that leads to the Narrow Mist Mountain. When Tanjiro was asking for directions, one of the villagers mentioned that it would be dangerous for him to travel at night as people had been going missing in the area.

Synopsis

When Tanjiro and Nezuko arrived at the hut, the Demon had just killed three people. When the Demon tried to strangle Tanjiro, Nezuko kicked its head clean off its body.[5]

Tanjiro startled by the still moving headless body

Even without a head, the Demon could still command its body to attack the siblings. The Demon also grew a pair of hands from his head. As the body was furiously attacking Nezuko, Tanjiro tackled the body and threw it off a cliff. However, this did not result in the Demon's death, although losing its body caused it excruciating pain.[6]

Tanjiro then pinned the Demon's head to a tree with his axe to stop its movements. Because he was too compassionate, he failed to kill the Demon before dawn, causing the Demon to perish by the sun's first rays instead.[7]

After the Demon's death, Sakonji Urokodaki gave the Demon's victims a proper burial.[8]

Trivia

  • Temple Demon is the first character in the manga that comments on Tanjiro's extremely hard head.
  • Some Japanese fans also call him "Shrine Demon" ( (どう) (おに) Dō no oni?) or "Geodude".
